John Porter
TORONTO, Canada

John Porter is a Toronto filmmaker, performer, photographer and writer. An advocate of Super 8 and low-budget movies ($50 or less), he has made more than 300 films since 1968, shown at more than 100 international screenings. He has given many Super 8 and 16 mm workshops and courses, spoken at university conferences, and has been actively involved in several artist-run centres in Toronto, as a member or programmer, since 1978, including The Funnel Experimental Film Theatre (1977-1989), Pleasure Dome: Artists’ Film Exhibition Group (since 1989) and Cinecycle (since 1991). In 1998 Pleasure Dome published an important monograph on his work.

ANTITUBE

Founded in March 1995, Antitube présents cinema and video events in Québec City. In April 1996 it held its first public activity. Antitube is devoted to the presentation of the culture, history and future of moving images. It favours the other image, the image from another place or another moment, which arrives without fanfare, which is unusual and surprising. The art of moving images (cinema, video or electronic), this gréât demonstrator of the relativity of human actions and beliefs, this powerful political and cultural catalyser has been one of the most important cultural contributions of the 20th century. Antitube offers the Québec City public various activities that integrate the memory and future of moving images.
