MATERIA

MATERIA is an artist-run centre whose mandate is to disseminate and promote artistic enquiry and creation in the applied arts both nationally and internationally.

MATERIA seeks to broaden familiarity with and recognition of fine craft and its artists in all their disciplinary diversity. It promotes both established and emerging artists by presenting their work in a gallery context, thus countering a general perception by which the applied arts are limited to handcrafts sold in craft shops and at fairs. MATERIA’s committment to the development of the discipline involves not only a change of mentality but also contributes to reflection and to the growth of critical discourse regarding the applied arts. MATERIA presents work straddling the boundaries of design, stage arts, visual arts and traditional arts.
